A Report on Measuring the Expenses of Biosecurity in Poultry Farm

Abstract

Biosecurity refers to procedures used to prevent the introduction and spread of disease causing organisms in poultry flocks. Many risk management practices are constantly in place, regardless of whether there is a disease outbreak or not. Nonetheless, the farm-level expenses of preventive biosecurity have rarely been assessed. This study examined the costs incurred by preventive biosecurity for Finish poultry farms. I used a semi-structured questionnaire and obtained results from 20 broiler producers. The results indicate that the average cost of biosecurity is some 25.28 taka per bird for broiler producers (0.84 taka per bird per rearing day). For a batch of 3000 broilers, the total biosecurity cost would be 71820 taka. The total biosecurity expenses per bird are dependent on the number of birds, the higher the number of birds, the lower the expenses per bird. This impact is primarily due to decreasing labour expenses rather than direct monetary costs. Larger farms seem to utilise less labour per bird for biosecurity actions. . The use of preventive medication as a preventive measure to control disease was found to have the largest expense in comparison to other expenses in biosecurity
