Treatment of Mammary Adenocarcinoma in a Street Dog

Abstract

A female street dog with signs of weakness and lethargy was brought to the S. A. Q. Teaching Veterinary Hospital. A large volume of unidentified mass was found at the mid inguinal region. The mass included a large portion of the skin expanding to multiple teats of the animal. The mass expanded from the mid inguinal region including the last pair of teats towards the end of the pre-pubic area. Tentative diagnosis was malignant tumor. Diagnosis was confirmed by cytopathology. The surgeons held a detailed discussion with the owners about the risks involving the surgery and performed the surgical excision with their consent. Since surgical excision in the designated area would endanger major blood vessels, the surgeons carefully performed blunt dissections to avoid such occurrence. The tumor was successfully excised along with the affected teats. The animal recovered successfully following the surgery. For a follow up period of one month, the animal did not show any of the previous clinical signs and did not show any new symptoms either.
