Abstract: Study on defects of hides and skins and their impacts on the national economy were carried out 2017. The objectives of the study were to identify the type of ante mortem and postmortem defects of hides and skins that caused downgrading and rejection of hides and skins during Eid- Ul-Azha and impact on their national economy. A Survey was conducted to identify the causal factors of ante mortem and postmortem defects of hides and skins. A large number of factors of ante mortem due to cruelty handling and casting of the animal. A large number of factor of postmortem defects of hides and skins associated with operations at homestead slaughter and rural slaughter slabs included incorrect design of the flaying knife (e.g. sharp pointed knife), careless and rapid flaying, inexperienced flayers particularly during Eid-Ul-Azha festivals, artificial overstretching particularly of goat skins, non-inclusions cutaneous muscles in the hides and skins in the urban areas. Major factor related to processing and preservation were delayed in curing particularly during Eid-Ul-Azha festivals and in rural areas under-salting, dry salting and ground drying of the hides, incorrect design of the knife used In” after cleaning; rapid and careless” after cleaning.
