Title: ASSESSMENT OF ANIMAL WELFARE IN SELECTED CATTLE MARKET AT RANGPUR CITY DURING EID-UL-AZHA

Abstract: A total number of 60 cattle and 30 goats were studied randomly at Lalbag Hat, Hajir Hat and Burir Hat cattle market of Rangpur city during Eid-ul-Azha. Along with this, all animal were examined by physical examination. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of different basic needs providing to comfort the animal during handling, transport and staying in market and present condition of animal welfare in Rangpur district of Bangladesh. The frequency of transport by vehicle, water supply after transport, roofing for protecting from sun light, injured during and after transport, consulting with doctor was 63.45%, 33.43%, 40.84%, 21.98%, 25% for cattle and 75.21%, 28.73%. 17.44%, 9.38%, 32% for goats, respectively. From the result we can see that the overall basic needs were lower. In conclusion, the cattle and goat affected a number of serious injuries and illness during handling and transportation. This is clearly indicating the poor condition of animal welfare in selected cattle market of Bangladesh. For this reason greater attention need to pay during handling and transportation of livestock
