Abstract: Umbilical hernia is an important congenital defects that are most frequent in calves. The objective of the study is to evaluate the surgical efficacy of umbilical hernia in a calf. A one month old female local breed calf (Red Chittagong cattle) approximately 30kg with the history of umbilical swelling was brought to the Upazilla Veterinary Hospital, Raozan, Chittagong. The presence of hernial ring, reducibility of hernial content, no painful reaction were the confirmation of umbilical hernia. All physical parameters were normal. On the basis of above findings, the case was decided for surgical correction. Under sedation and local anesthesia, a linear skin incision was given on dorsal to the hernia mass and then hernia was corrected by open herniorrhapy method and with applying horizontal mattress sutures. Proper post-operative care with antibiotic, antihista and pain killer was maintained for next five days and follow up observation revealed normal umbilical after ten days of operation. Complete recovery with proper healing was found after 10 days of operation without any complication. The study concluded that umbilical hernia could be managed by herniorrhapy with proper post-operative care in field condition.
